Drawing on Sun Power for Housing Justice

There's a story in the Popol Wuj about Vucub-Caquix, a powerful and deceptive bird named Seven Macaw, who pretends to be the light of the Sun but in reality only reflects it. A few days ago, I read "The Tenants who Evicted Their Landlord" and was reminded of Seven Macaw's deceptive power when I read about a demo at a church vigil where the landlord attended. When asked why they chose to demonstrate at a religious gathering, organizers responded: “To remind them [the landlord and law makers] that City Hall isn’t a place of sun power but moon power... Sometimes those people forget... They think the power comes from them, like they are the sun, sending out the power. But they are like the moon, shining back our power. Our actions remind them that the power comes from the people.” I’m honored to be working with Jews United for Justice on housing justice for renters in Baltimore largely because they recognize that power lays with the people and not with the their so called representatives.
